Small Site Update and Fix

Just a quick note to let everyone know I have updated the "Favorite Links" section in the navigation (to the right). I added links to some Flickr photos, Lindy's Twitter feed, my Twitter feed, and my travel itinerary as reported by Dopplr (which is a really cool site if you and your friends travel a lot). I also changed the name from "Favorite Links" to "More of Us."

Lastly, I've fixed the server restart bug I blogged about earlier this week. Whenever the server restarts it will now make sure the Web site comes back up immediately along with it. So, we should be seeing a lot less downtime around here.

New Header Photo

Today I decided it was time to get rid of the default header image on here and replace it with something more personal. I tasked Lindy with picking out an image and she did a great job choosing a shot of the three of us. The photo was taken at the Nashville Zoo earlier this summer during Gavin's first zoo visit ever! You can't tell from the photo but he really enjoyed seeing all the animals for the first time. His favorites were the ones that moved around a lot such as the big cats, giraffe's, alligator's, and monkey's.

What do you think of the new header photo? Post a comment and let us know!

A Bit of Downtime

Before leaving for work this morning I pulled up our blog on my iPhone only to discover it was down. I host this blog with a provider that allows me to control almost 100% of what goes on with the server. Unfortunately, this also means I have to play system administrator for all things Linux as well as ColdFusion (the server and software used to host the blog).

The downtime from this morning came about when the server our blog runs on restarted but ColdFusion did not. I've manually restarted ColdFusion and things are back up and running. I caught the issue quick and we experienced only 3 hours and 40 minutes of downtime. I need to figure out how to get ColdFusion to automatically restart when the server restarts as that will keep this problem from occurring again.

Anyhow, everything is back up and running so enjoy!

New to Blogs?

I realize that many of you following this blog have probably never paid any attention to blogs before.  Did you know you can add comments to a post?  Just click on the Comments link and fill in the info.  Now fill in the letters you see in the funny textbox at the end and you are done.  The funny textbox is called a LylaCaptcha, and we added it so that automated comments could not be posted, only those from real readers.

I bet you find yourself coming back to this site often to see if we have posted anything new.  You can subscribe to our blog and read it through RSS reader software.  I found an article describing the Top 10 Free Readers/Aggregators for Windows, but I'll let Aaron guide you thru setting up and subscribing to our feed.  I'm a little fuzzy on how all that works and my setup is for the Mac.

Happy commenting!

Welcome to Our World!

Well over two years ago Lindy and I decided to purchase some real estate that would last us a lifetime. This real estate was in the form of a domain name and not a piece of property somewhere, though the property would certainly have been more profitable.  The real estate we purchased, aaronandlindy.com, was bought with the plan of setting up a blog we could use to keep family and friends updated on our lives.  That was in 2005.  Here it is 2008 and an unbelievable amount of change has taken place in our lives. Enough change I suppose to push me over the edge in getting this Web site configured.

I spent most of this past weekend exercising my geek muscles configuring my VPS (Virtual Private Server) to work with this new Web site. I'll leave all the super-geek stuff for my technology blog and not bore you, but suffice to say the Web site is up and running!  So, welcome to what I hope will become a small glimpse into the lives we lead day-to-day.

Our plans for this site are to post (regularly) anything and everything we feel may be useful to family and friends. This of course includes photos, videos, and stories of our son, Gavin who, from the moment we knew he was coming to his birth over 15 months ago, has anchored himself deep within our hearts.  I cannot describe the immeasurable change he has caused in our lives and the utter joy he brings every single day. He has truly been the greatest gift we have ever received.  We will also post information and photos from our vacations or any other adventure that comes our way - sometimes when we are simply hanging out at home. Ultimately, we will share more of ourselves with you and we hope you will do the same through the blogs commenting system.

Welcome to our site!
